As indicated in this question, I'm running Windbg
from Excel, in order to analyse the results.
Within my Excel macro, there are following lines of code:
Windbg_PID1 = Shell("windbg -z """ + Txt_File1.Text + """ -logo """ + Output_FileName1 + """ -c "".load pykd.pyd;!py heap_stat.py -stat""", vbMaximizedFocus)
Windbg_PID2 = Shell("windbg -z """ + Txt_File2.Text + """ -logo """ + Output_FileName2 + """ -c "".load pykd.pyd;!py heap_stat.py -stat""", vbMaximizedFocus)
And after quite some Windbg
processing, there is following command to close the mentioned Windbg
sessions:
Shell "TASKKILL /PID " + CStr(Windbg_PID1) + " /PID " + CStr(Windbg_PID2)
Everything is working fine, but there's a catch : it seems that all Excel files (even the ones who have nothing to do with my Windbg
analysis) get grouped under the same Excel application, and as long as my Windbg
launching macro is running, all my other Excel files turn into Not responding
.
Does somebody know how to:
- (Preferably) Launching a macro within an Excel file (even if it contains
Shell()
worksheet function), without making my Excel file "not responding". - (In case point 1 is impossible) open my other Excel files under a separate Excel application. (When I open 3 Excel files and I run
tasklist | findstr /I excel
, I should get 3 results)
(For your information, I already tried using vbNormalNoFocus
as Window style but this did not save the issue)

@Yane: thanks for the quick response, but this leaves me with another problem: as stated in that link, it is possible to start up a new Excel session, launchingExcel /x
, but how can I add this/x
switch to the*.xlsm
file extension? (It gives the possibility to choose an app, but I seem not to be able to add switches to it)

maybe this 4. Edit the Registry: Force Excel to Open in a New Instance by Default My suggestion would be to adjust your workflow in a way that you startr all normal files as usual and always open the files that use Windbg in a separate instance.
