I'm making a program that reads and writes to .GRNT files, which is simply a custom file format I've made.

Here's the reader code:

Try
 If ofd.ShowDialog() = True Then
 Using br As New BinaryReader(File.Open(ofd.FileName, FileMode.Open))
 txt.Text = br.ReadString
 End Using
 End If
Catch ex As Exception
 MsgBox(ex.Message)
End Try

And here's the code for the writer:

Try
 If sfd.ShowDialog() = True Then
 Using bw As New BinaryWriter(File.Open(sfd.FileName, FileMode.Create))
 bw.Write(txt.Text)
 End Using
 End If
Catch ex As Exception
 MsgBox(ex.Message)
End Try

As you can see, very similar code, just changed a bit for the corresponding actions.
However, when I try to save or open a file, nothing shows up in the program's text field, and nothing is written to the directory.

Please help!

  By the way, if your are using a Windows Forms OpenFileDialog and SaveFileDialog then the ShowDialog method returns a DialogResult value, not a Boolean. You should be comparing to DialogResult.OK rather than to True. You should have Option Strict On, in which case that code wouldn't even compile. I'm not sure whether that is the source of your issue but it is certainly something to fix.

  You should turn Option Strict On in the project properties and you should also turn it On in the IDE options, so that it is On by default in future projects. The compiler will then flag issues like this. You should also learn how to debug your code, i.e. set breakpoints and step through the code while you examine state. Doing so in this case would have shown you that you weren't even getting into the If block and at least indicate where you should be looking for the cause.
